A Woman Full of Happiness

When I was looking at the pictures on my instructor’s blog, I found a really charming woman. She was smiling slightly at me, and her subtle smile grabbed my heart. She was staring at the camera with a peaceful mind. I was wondering why she was so attractive, and why she seemed to have a peaceful mind. As a result, now I started to imagine her personality and her life.

To be honest, the woman in this picture is not beautiful. She has a round face, high cheek-bones, and wide, full lips. She probably has long black hair; I cannot see the color of her skin and hair because the picture is a black and white picture, so she looks like an Asian woman; however, she has a long and high nose which most Asian people don’t have. Her big eyes are staring at the camera gently, and it makes me think she has a peaceful mind. In addition, her well fixed eyebrows seem like she has a strong will and is a reliable person. Her appearance really made a good impression on me.

She is wearing snug clothes which look very thick, quilted and warm, plus there is a fur scarf around her neck, which means she came from somewhere cold. She is sitting somewhere but nothing is in the background, so I guess she took this picture in a photography studio. Also, her clothes seem not only worm but also formal and traditional; the pattern of her clothes shows some plants and flowers. It makes me think her ethnic group may love nature. In this way, I know she probably took this picture to remember an important period or special event in her life.

This picture is a black and white picture, so I think it is from many years ago. As I already mentioned, she seemed to be happy and have a peaceful mind, and she is wearing formal clothes. From these viewpoints, I think she is a bride-to-be. She is waiting for her marriage. That’s why she took the picture with formal clothes for her great memory before she gets married. In addition, she is smiling happily because she will get married. I can see that she is full of happiness and it makes me happy too; to see someone’s happiness makes our feeling good.

To imagine one’s life from just one picture was hard, and we need a rich imagination to understand how one lives. However, we are watched and judged by others based on our appearance just I did this time. The woman in this picture was not beautiful honestly, however, I could see her inner beauty. I learned that if we can improve our inside, and be happy from the bottom of our heart, we can attract people like her at least without appearance mattering.

The Old Sad Man

I chose this picture because the old man in the picture must have had a really hard life. The old man is dressed in old clothes with a gigantic heavy basket on his back which is full of merchandise, and he walks around the market in Korea. I cannot imagine why someone maybe older than eighty years would keep working. I can feel the sadness of his life from his eyes, with helplessness and hopelessness.

The old Korean man has a normal face like other Asian elderly men. There are so many wrinkles on his face and a lot of age spots on his skin which show that he is no younger than eighty. He has a round face with no sharpness. His lovely hook nose remains, which makes me think that he must have been very handsome when he was young. The prolapsed corners of his mouth make him appear as an unsmiling tough old man. But I think the real reason is that there is almost no teeth in his mouth which causes the skin near his mouth to droop. The most important part which attracted me is his eyes. The turbid bleak eyes show a lot of pathos. That makes people know what happened with the old man, including me.

The clothes of the man and the background in the picture can also tell people many things. He dresses in an old but clean shirt and a vest with a lot of pockets. There is a black hat covering his hairless head, and this old hat may be sent by the government because of the sign on it. Behind his back, there must be a huge basket full of goods. He tries his best to take more goods with him so that there are even many goods and in his hands. Even all of his pockets are full of goods. He is standing in a traditional Korean market where people sell necessities, including clothes, rugs and hats. The old man must be one of these vendors.

The story behind the picture is that the senior citizen has had a truly sad life. Perhaps his wife died five years ago and he lives with his grandson who is twelve years now and studies in a primary school. The child’s parents, the old man’s son and daughter in law, had a traffic accident three years ago and all passed away. The only family left is the grandfather and grandson. For earning the cost of living and the child’s tuition, the old man has to get up early everyday and walk around several markets to sell his goods. Because he does not have enough money to rent a stand in the market, this is the only way to make money. Now, he worries about his grandson’s tuition for next semester. He needs another one hundred dollars to break even. That is why he shows the helplessness and hopelessness from his lackluster eyes.

When I look at the picture, from his face and his clothes, I know how hard the old man’s life is. Considering his special situation, I really want to find this poor senior citizen and try my best to help his family. I believe other people who see this picture and know the sad story must have the same idea as me. But the only thing we can do is pray for him. I hope he can get through the difficulty.

What Does Obama Worry About?

If I were a president, I would have a full schedule. I couldn’t have a lot of privacy. I couldn’t do anything or go anywhere that I like. My life would become like The Truman Show because people could watch anything I do and judge me and my family. I wouldn’t be very happy if I were a president because I would need to worry about a lot of things such as my country’s well done and my family. I wouldn’t want to be at my wit's end. This is a picture of the new president of the United States, Barack Obama, and he looks worried about a lot of things.

When I saw this picture, first, I saw his movement. He folds his dark brown hands together. He wants to lay down his head on his hands and make himself more comfortable. His hands look strong so they can protect him. He wears a black jacket, a white dress shirt, and a gray polka-dotted tie, so we can know that he was in an important meeting. That meeting is about the United States’ economy, and there are a lot of members of Congress arguing against him. They want him to live up to his promise to improve the United States’ economy by decreasing oil prices and taxes. That is why he looks so worried.

Second, I saw his facial expression. He has black-brown eyes, black eyebrows, a little triangular nose, and bistre lips. From his black-brown eyes, I can see that he worries about something such as how to answer the questions of Congress. He wonders how he can develop the United States’ economy without people arguing against him. He wants to come up with ideas to live up to his promise to the people. His black eyebrows show that he is not relaxed. He also has some wrinkles on his face, stretching from his nose to his mouth. I can tell that he feels anxious. He tries to figure out how to fulfill his promises about making the United States’s foreign policy become better such as the relationship between Palestine and Israel. That is why his face is so wrinkly.

Last, I noticed his head posture. He has short black hair on his small pointed head. He tilts his head to his right side almost lying down on his folded hands. It looks like he is tired. He might think about a lot of things at this time. They might be about his country, or his family. He is also worried about his family because now that he is a president, people use a magnifying glass to watch them. He doesn’t want his children to have a lot of stress because they are little. He wants his daughters to have a happy childhood and also have good behaviors so that people won’t point at them. He wants to be a good leader of his country, but he also wants to be a good father of his children that is why he is at his wit's end.

I know that a president needs to manage a country, and it is very hard. When I saw Obama in the picture, he looks so tired. I also feel that he looks so innocent. I don't think he caused any of the United States’ problems. He wonders what he can do about those problems. I can see from his movement, facial expression, and posture that he looks very weary. He seems worried about the economy, foreign policy, and his family. So, being a president is not an easy thing.

The Dictator's Portrait

I recently watched the movie Valkyrie. It was about a captain who assassinated Adolf Hitler, so I chose this picture. This is a black and white picture. There are two middle aged men standing in the middle of the picture. The one on the right is Adolf Hitler. The one on the left is Benito Mussolini. Their armies are behind them. This picture has no relationship to Valkyrie, but it attracted me to discover the story behind the picture.

These two men both have solemn and emotionless faces, but Hitler’s face looks more serious. His eyes are droopy. It seems like he didn’t sleep very well for a long time. Hitler’s outstanding square mustache and tightly closed mouth make him look like a cold-blooded killer. His mustache is so hairy that it blocks his nostrils. I don’t know if he can breathe well. His cap covers his bald head and there are only two small, clean ears outside. However Mussolini is wearing a green beret. It also covers all of his hair. I can predict that he has short hair like Hitler’s. His eyes are slanted. Was he sad? Or was he just pretending to be sad. Unlike Hitler’s snub nose, Mussolini has a hawk shaped nose. And he doesn’t have mustache, so he was probably breathing more smoothly than Hitler. His lips are longer and thicker than Hitler’s. He must good at talking. Because they occupied the main part of the picture, I hardly see what the two soldiers behind them look like. I can only see part of one soldier’s face. He looks a little nervous.

In addition to their faces, I’ve also studied their clothing and weapons. The most different part of their clothing is they have different emblems. A swastika symbol is on Hitler’s left arm, while an eagle patch is on Mussolini’s arm. There are many medals hanging from Mussolini’s clothing, but only one little medal hanging from Hitler’s clothing which makes Mussolini’s clothing more like a general’s costume. There are two shining epaulets on his shoulder, and he has a colorful belt. Although they wear nearly the same style clothing, they carry different weapons. There is a sword which is tied at Mussolini’s waist, but Hitler is equipped with a pistol. Hitler seems smarter than Mussolini because a pistol is more efficient than a sword. They have different political opinions. Hitler’s politics are more modern while Mussolini is more conservative.

This is a very common picture on the internet, but it took me a long time to find the story behind the picture. In 1940, the Italian government invaded Greece, and didn’t tell his friend in Germany. Mussolini wanted to improve his government’s status in the Axis Powers. The Italian government didn’t expect that the Greek army would be so brave. Many Italian soldiers died and the Italian government retreated their army to the Greek border, and asked Germany for help. In order to help the Italian army, the Axis Powers invaded Yugoslavia near Greece. This picture was taken when the Axis Powers won the war in Yugoslavia. Two dictators were standing in Yugoslavia and looking around like two hungry raptors. After this was, the Axis Powers began their full-scale war against Russia and America. In this picture, Hitler looks more confident and ambitious. Mussolini always listens to Hitler and follows his orders. Mussolini treats Hitler like his brother and because he looks up to Hitler, Hitler can use him as a weapon. These two men have gotten together to make evil plans to destroy the world.

After carefully studying this picture, I learned more about World War II. But I still don’t understand what made these two guys in the picture become the public enemies in WWII. Their appearance has no difference with other common people, but their behaviors greatly affected the world’s development.

Choosing My Major

After deciding to study abroad, I was confused about which major I wanted to choose. This time it was not easy for me to make this decision because I needed to think more about it than before. The major of my master’s degree is not just coming from my interest, but also from considering some related elements. I am mature and have a responsibility to carry out my family duty. Due to our family business, I need to pick out a major concerning management. Owing to my undergraduate major--electronic commerce, I would like to pursue a major which is still in business school. From personal experience, I am not good at doing technological jobs, but instead I am better in managing. For the reasons I mentioned, I will study in the MBA program. Maybe it is challenging, but I can make sure it is the best choice for me.

To begin with, studying for the MBA can help me prepare well for my future career. My parents want me to take over the family business when I finish my studies. It requires leadership skills, managing capability, and coordinating talent. In order to improve these skills, I need to go to school to receive the information and knowledge. From group study, I can learn how to communicate well with other people who hold different ideas than me, how to balance well with every team member, and how to coordinate well in each department. It is beneficial for self-development, leadership skills and my future career. Without the practice in MBA classes, it is difficult to receive the information that can improve my management skill which can prepare me well for the future leader role.

Moreover, my undergraduate major affects me more. In my undergraduate study, half of my courses are related to business fields, such as: general management, marketing, international trade and so on. Many business teachers of mine are very successful in management areas. From the class activities and teachers’ introductions, my interests about business management were raised and I wanted to research more information related to administration. So I made a decision to change my study emphasis to management. I benefited a lot from E-Commerce which was my undergraduate major. It lead me to the door of business, made me know more about management, brightened my future road, and helped me to choose MBA as my master’s program.

Last but not least, my life experience helped me to discover more about my interests and skills. Due to the characteristics of my major, I gained much knowledge about computer science. Also I wrote some programs using JAVA and C language. However, during the process, I was not interested in it and did not enjoy doing it, for I know it is not my interest. As a result of repeating work, teachers required us to write the same language sentence over and over again. I am a kind of girl who always has curiosity of discovering and learning newer, more challenging and exciting information. Technology is not the right field for me. In contrast, management creates more opportunities for me to communicate with people from all walks of life, getting in touch with more versatile cases as well as dealing with unexpected situations.

In conclusion, MBA is the best major for me to pursue for my master’s degree. It is not only from my family situation, undergraduate study, but also from personal experience. In my opinion, I chose an excellent major as my master program. I believe I can study happily in the MBA program at UWL.

Recommended Movie

When we hear the word “oil,” maybe we will imagine cooking or a syrupy liquid. We never think it is important for some people to live. There is a movie called Lorenzo’s Oil. This movie is about fighting against serious diseases. I strongly urge you to watch this movie because it’s about family live, truth, and the power of life.

Firstly, while you watch this movie, even afterwards, you may feel family love. In this movie, a boy contracted a serious disease called ALD, which doctors couldn’t treat. However, his parents never gave up on their son. His father quit his job and studied to search for the cure by himself for a long time. Then, finally he found it. In addition, his mother also quit her job, and she always took care of him. His parents devoted everything for their son because they believed he would get well.

Secondly, this movie tells us a true story. As I said before, the father found the cure for his disease. Actually, this discovery was a big step in the medical world. However, while his father was searching, people never helped him. In other words, people thought that he couldn’t find the solution and felt pity for the boy because of the symptoms of his disease. For example, he couldn’t speak clearly, and he often screamed. Therefore, I think this movie helps us think about the complex relationship between disease people and supporters.

Finally, this movie tells us about the power of life. Even though his father was not a doctor, and he was just a bank officer, he researched on his own and finally found the cure. He taught us if we keep doing something, we can reach our dream, and it is important to keep moving forward. Also, the sick boy maintained a strong will and never gave up to live. His body function was getting worse because of the disease. It is said this disease leads to death in two years. I was really impressed and was inspired by him who was in this bad situation.

There are a lot of movies in the world, but I want you to watch this movie first especially if you are sad, lose your way, or try to do new things. This movie can fulfill your mind and give you power.

A Great Movie You Should Watch

Have you ever been assigned a mission that goes beyond your ability? I think you may come across some situations where you don't want to do the assignment, but you do not have any choice. You can find the same situation in the movie called Saving Private Ryan, where eight people have to carry out their mission to rescue one person in a terrible battlefield. I recommend this movie because of the friendships within the army, the nature of the battle, and the decision to commit to the assignment.

Firstly, you have to see this movie to learn about the soldiers' friendships within the army. Many people who have been in the military will miss those days, even though they were really tough times. In fact, the treasured memories are their friendships in the army, which is called the love of brothers-in-arms. Not only did they have to be trained together, but they also completed the tough assignment and shared their feelings with each other. This movie shows how precious the friendships the eight people have to help each other. Without this, they could have died. For example, when I committed myself to a military assignment to remove a jammed shell from a cannon, I had my soldiers help me to solve this dangerous situation. Luckily, we completed it, and then we built strong friendships.

In addition, you can also find this movie heartening by its depiction of World War II. If you look deeply inside your heart, you will find that the nature of war comes from nothing but cruelty from this movie. Too many people died in the war. This movie reminded me of my time in the military. I could also remember that my captain gave me an order to shoot my soldiers if they didn't fight or if they ran away when the war between China and Taiwan almost broke out. And I also had to keep a final bullet for myself when the enemy captured our cave. I had no idea whether I could do it or not. Why can't people treat each other with peace? Like the soldiers in Saving Private Ryan, it was cruel that I had to face such a ridiculous situation. Fortunately, the war didn't break out and I didn't need to kill my soldiers, or even myself. I hope any kind of war will never happen in the future because the the nature of war is cruel.

Finally, the most important idea is that we should criticize the value of the mission of eight men risking their lives to save just one. It really cost too much that I think the mission was not worth completing. Especially we have have to think of the benefits of the whole country in war, not only one person or one family. In other words, we should rather do the right thing than do the thing right. Nevertheless, they are soldiers, so they have to obey their order even it is ridiculous. From this movie, you will have to discover if you are in the same situation, you will also have no choice when you get the same mission.

I love this movie very much. Not only is it a film which is my favorite genre, but it also makes me think about my military service. I had been a commander in the military, so I could realize why Captain Miller made the decision even if it was a dilemma. I would like to recommend this movie because it can make you think more about friendship within the army, the nature of war, and the ridiculousness of the mission. I hope you will watch this movie if you were interested in my statements.

Think Before You Live Off Campus

Living off campus can give us more freedom and is much cheaper than living on campus. I have been living off campus for more than seven months and it can help me save money, but there still are many serious problems for me, such as the utility bills which are very high in the winter. My roommates always forget to clean the house, and the distance between my house and college is too long. Even if living off campus has many benefits like more freedom and less money, the problems of high utility bills, lazy roommates, and long distance trouble me many times.

In the winter, we need to turn on our heater, which causes our energy bills to be much higher than in the summer. When we first moved into our house, the utility bills were about eighty dollars per month on average, and each person just needed to pay twenty dollars per month. However, in the winter, the average number increased to more than one hundred fifty dollars. That is to say, every one needs to pay about forty dollars for the energy bill each month. What was worse, the price of gas was increasing sharply during these past two months. For instance, the month before last our total utility bill was more than two hundred, but last month, our bill was more than three hundred dollars. We asked our friend to help us to contact the energy company. They said it was right because, in the winter, the gas will need more to start it, and they had changed the way to calculate gas. Although our rent is just two hundred thirty seven dollars, the utility bill is high.

There are four students in our house, three women and one man. We can get along with each other in daily life, but the house is always full of things such as clothes, food, books and even some rubbish here and there. We also can find dirty dishes and wasted food on the table. Sometimes, the dirty dishes will stay on the table for more than one week. Even after I have told them several times, it will still be the same. Because our house is a very old one, the bathroom often have problems such as clogged shower drains and toilets. That’s a big problem because we have to be very careful when we use the bathroom. Also, women’s hair is longer than men's so it’s much easier to clog the pipes of the shower drain. We have to use special tools to clean it. I even had to use a fork to clean it last week. It’s necessary to choose the house carefully if we want to move off campus. Be careful; never choose a old house.

It’s about a twenty-minutes walk from my house to the campus. Maybe one would say it’s a good opportunity to exercise, but I have to say that it’s really hard when we walk to school in the winter. The temperature is too low and I feel frozen while walking for a long time to go to the university. I also have to work at night. It’s much harder for me to come back home without the bus because I’m always too late to go back. Many times, when I came home, it was twelve at night. My roommates often miss the bus because sometimes it’s not in time, maybe a little earlier or later. Last week, I missed the bus and there were only ten meters between me and the bus. I watched it as it was passing by me. So if wanting to live off campus, one should please choose a closer house, not a one further away.

Above all, living on campus is much more expensive than living off campus, but living off campus has many serious problems such as high utility bills, long distance between the campus and the house, and an unclean house. That’s not to say that we should live in the school’s dorm, we can choose a close house so we can save time and energy. It’s also very safe, because in winter, the roads are slippery and dangerous. We also need to choose good roommates, we can’t get along with the roommates who always throw rubbish here and there. Finally, if we want to save more, we should learn how to save energy. A lot of things could be solved when we live off campus, but we will become much more independent than before. It’s a good opportunity to prepare for the future life. Just remember to think before we live off campus.
